Recently, a good friend sent me a report by Sparkline Capital that examines the rise of technology from the perspective of its human creators. They measured how well companies are embracing and positioning themselves for the digital age by looking at how much they invest in technical human capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pandemic has forced businesses to digitize. We have seen spaces like e-commerce, cloud computing, remote work, telemedicine, and online education take off like never before. These industries have now crossed the point of critical mass and are now poised to take the market by storm. Now, the technology infrastructure and the peripherals have grown so much. It is a great opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s take a look at some of the companies in these aspects that have taken off: Shopify (e-commerce infrastructure), <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shopify – A company that empowers everyday people to start their own e-commerce business<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Amazon – A behemoth that needs no introduction with fingers in pies like e-commerce and cloud computing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Zoom – An awesome remote work and communication platform<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
Teladoc – One of the top telemedicine platforms in the USA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Chegg – An online education company that provides for all your needs (in terms of learning) as a student<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I have not invested in many of these earlier – shows that I’m not good enough of a visionary, but I am learning…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the S-curve of technology adoption has been compressing. It took people 40 years to adopt the telephone, 20 years to adopt mobile phones, and now only 10 years to adopt the smartphone. The compounding of knowledge has enabled the human population to grow and flourish, but that also means that our knowledge is getting obsolete faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, artificial intelligence has already reached a point that it can predict way better than we can. Robots are taking over manufacturing jobs on the floor. Diagnostics can be done from a computer using sensors linked to the cloud (Internet of Things). But the human capital investment is still the most important piece of the pie for companies. Not in terms of skill sets, but in terms of mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need to have people who are more entrepreneurial. We need people who dare to challenge the status quo because they can do better. We need people of integrity and character who dare to stand up against the legacy systems and make things better. Only then will we be a valuable asset to whoever that chooses to work with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Systems are great, but they need to keep adapting for the future. And we humans need to continue developing a living system that moves with the times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t look at the past industry. Look at the future industry. There is no point in investing in something that has already happened. It is investing in something that has a high probability of happening before anyone else knows about it. It’s about going to the frontier markets and frontier technologies where people make the most money.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
